One thing you should realize about getting used solar panels is that they don't need to be perfect panels in order for them to be good deals! Many older solar panels, and even damaged panels, can still be quite useful. For example, a 100 watt used solar panel that still puts out 50 or 60 watts of electricity can often be purchased for $1 to $2 a watt. If you're not limited on space, there's nothing wrong with a used panel like that. You can often pick up these types of used solar panels at real bargain prices, sometimes even for free just for hauling them off... and most will still have many years of useful life in them!
Another source of good used solar panels can be insurance companies, particularly if you live in an area where hail storms or strong windstorms are prevelant. Contact local homeowners insurance agents and ask them what the insurance company does with solar panels that have been damaged. They should be able to put you in touch with the salvage disposal division of their companies, and you can often buy these panels for pennies on the dollar.
What good are they? Often the solar panels just need new glass put on them. The insurance company won't do that, they replace the entire panels for their customers, but you can do this easily yourself, or have your local glass shop do it, and you've got some great used panels for next to nothing!
