How do you find salvaged materials for remodeling a home?i.e wood cabinets.plumbing parts?

I am remodeling an older lake home.I have read in many of the books and magazines that salvage yards are a great source of all kinds of materials.
How do I find a salvage yard in my area..
I would love to find 100 year old wood doors..glass door knobs and the like.

Try the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. The one in our town has some great salvaged materials. Also, look in the Yellow pages under: "Salvage" or "Building Materials - Used" Might just find a treasure at one of these places.
Have fun - this is my kind of "hunting!"

I have the jenn air floating glass black appliances and light stained cabinets and black granite counter tops. i wanted black but it is really hard to find black door handles what do you suggest?

Check out this vendor. You might have to do some hunting for local dealors due to the fact they don't sale to the public, but I know they carry all black glass knobs, which might had a fun flair to your kitchen.

How do variable speed cameras work, specically how do they read and transfer data ?

Almost all speed cameras are digital.

The radar detects the cars speed and if above whatever trip point is currently set by the central control room, the (digital) camera is triggered.

Two photos are taken, with the fixed time delay between the 2 shots allowing the distance traveled to be used to calculate speed and thus back up the reading from the radar.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition software then extracts the vehicle reg. number and an on-line computer look-up via DVLA Swansea allows automatic printing of the fixed penalty notice (or, if the car has been reported stolen or the reg. number does not exist, automatic notification to the nearest Police car)

The only bit not fully automatic is the extraction of the fine from your Bank account (however I'm sure they are working on that too, especially as London Congestion Charge has already shown the way )

How accurate are the M42 variable speed cameras?

I was doing about 45mph when the speed limit went down to 40mph. I couldn't slam on the brakes as cars were merging from the left joining the m-way - note other cars were going slightly faster than me. Any thoughts on if I will be have been 'done'?
Annoying if I have - I never speed that much, do 30K miles per year and have never had any points since I passed my test in 2003!
Barry B - The signs are variable - they change all the time. This stretch or road is a constant annoyance to drivers who spend the whole stretch looking at their speedos not the road! I was looking ahead at other cars and trying not to crash i.e speed up/move over to let them in!

not all the cameras on the 42 work, they use maybe 2 cameras out the lot. its very easy to spot a camera in one of the units as you can see the flash in the ones with the camera and the rest are just empty boxes. doing 45 you are border line as they tend to trigger at about that (5mph over) as they have to allow for older cars where the speedo is slightly out by a few mph. if you have heard nothing then i wouldnt wory too much, if you got caught then you would have seen the flash in your mirrors. i know many a people who have zoomed past me while ive been on there and never seen a flash. they use gatso type cameras on there but in places they do use the specs cameras (its a camera, usually yellow that takes a pic of your car in 1 place then a mile down the road takes another and calculates your distance to speed). i think you will be ok.

I cant find a breeder basket. Can I make one out of a strainer and panty hose?

well i just went to walmart, but they didnt have any. I was thinking that a net might collapse on them or them get covered up by it because they are so flemsy. These are my first fish and I think my platty is about to have babies any day.

instead of putting her in a breeder i would leave her in the main tank and get live plants instead

this method always worked for me, and i always had about 5-15 fry survive that way

as soon as i started my pool this year i eas getting are bubbles coming out the return side i check to make sure i was not getting air in the strainer basket everything was fine there i replaced all hoses and seal on pump not getting any air in hair basket on pump tighten everything up and im still getting air what could it be

I would not replace anything. I have observed the same thing and can't be sure just what causes it. It may be just cavitation. It comes and goes(mostly goes) but has caused no problems that I am aware of. I would not worry about it.

I was wondering if anyone has ever used eyeglass scratch repair/remover for scratches on auto windshields?

I recently bought a used car that someone apparantly ran bad windshield wipers for a while. I put new ones on, but scratches are highly noticeable and on one side only. I noticed lens dr. scratch repair for eyeglasses, and just wondered if would work on automobile windshields. I called lens dr. customer service and inquired about situation, and they don't have any previous feedback or knowledge if it would work on auto windshields. I know there are a few other products specific for this type repair, but need high-speed grinder or drill which I don't have. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this matter.

the only thing that i know of for sure that works is take it to a glass shop,and have them buff the scratches out of it,they have a kit they use on them and it really works,it will remove the light scratches on it,deep ones it wont work on,but they usually charge around 35 bucks for this,and its well worth it for the time they spend on it,good luck with it.

What is the major difference between a high-speed and high-torque drill?

The Output Speed is generally the main difference. To increase the torque (strength)of the drill, the motor is geared down. The motor in the high speed drill and the high-torque drill may be turning at the same speed but the chucks or bit-holders will be very different.
Most drills come with two speeds. If the speed is controlled by a gear assembly, then the torque is much higher at the lower speed.

How to Drill Hard Metal

Drilling a hole into a piece of hard metal, such as steel, requires a different approach than drilling into wood or softer metals. Hard metals dull the drill bit so quickly that the bit cannot penetrate all the way through the metal. Instead of going through several drill bits just to create a single hole, you should employ a better technique. With the proper drill bit and technique, you will find that drilling hard metal is no more difficult than drilling other materials.

Step 1

Insert a cobalt drill bit into the end of a variable speed drill by following the instructions for the drill. If you are using a keyless chuck drill, as most are, simply turn the end of the drill collar counterclockwise top open it. Insert the drill bit with the sharp side facing outward and turn the collar clockwise to secure the bit.

Step 2
Lay the piece of metal that you are drilling onto a flat, stable work surface such as a table, the ground or between saw horses. If you lay it on a table or the ground, place a small block of wood under the metal in the location where you will drill the hole. This prevents the drill bit from damaging the table or getting dulled by the underlying surface.

Step 3
Pour 1 tsp. of oil onto the area where you will drill the hole. You can use any type of oil desired, but plain motor oil works fine.

Step 4
Set the speed of the drill to a low speed and turn it on.

Step 5
Place the drill bit against the oiled location on the metal and press downward with gentle pressure to begin drilling the hole. Take your time and allow the bit to slowly cut through the metal.

Step 6
Pull the drill bit out of the hole when it penetrates the metal and turn off the drill.

I want to make a still out of a stock pot and parts from a hardware store, do you have my directions?

I want to distill some potato mash to make vodka and I would like to build my own still to do it. I am not asking you to explain how a still works; I fully understand the concept of a liquid mixture being separated by different condensation levels. Nor am I asking for a picture of a still, they all work around that same concept. Just wondering if anyone else has one.. I find the light it gives off really relaxing just because it's so dim and orange colored. like being at the spa. but i'm not sure if it actually cleans the air or gives off negative ions. has anyone else had any experiences with these lamps?

Yes. I have more than one In fact, there is one in every bedroom in the house. My kids use them as nightlights. And yes, they are good for your health. In fact, I've even switched to pink himalayan salt for our food.

Amps is the amount of power the drill is putting out. a 5.4 amp is for basic household usage. If your looking for anything that's useful try a 14 -18amp drill that will give you more power.

Shower only to tub with shower?

We are redoing our basement bathroom, and going from a shower stall to a tub with shower. I have seen rough in's, valve's, trim kits. What exactly needs to be purchased for the new plumbing, not including the obvious facet and shower head?
It is being placed on concrete. There is already a drain from the shower that was there.

You will need a tub kit for the drain and overflow. Be sure that you have enough room to get to the drain under the tub to install. Is this going over concrete? Your rough in is going to have to be measured out very accurately. You may have to build up the floor to get enough room to have enough slope to drain. Tubs need to be supported fully on the bottom especially if the tub is plastic or fiberglass.

How easy is it to convert from a single handle to Double Handle Shower Only Trim ?

Here is the problem, with the single handle I am not able to control the water flow this is because when I try to have less water pouring out by turning the handle downwards... the water gets cold. The only way to have less water is to turn the handle in the direction of the cold side.

Replace the single handle valve with another single handle unit which has a flow control. OR add a flow control valve to the shower head.

Is there any way of removing a stain left by limescale remover discolouring a chrome shower tap?

I successfully descaled the shower tiles with limescale toilet cleaner but where it touched the shower tap it has discoloured it. Any ideas of how to rectify this?

Sound like your old shower hose had an adaptor fitted?
Unless it was a non return valve, see item number 94453 at www.toolstation.com, they come in chrome finish too.
Water regs say the your shower hose should not be able to syphon water from your shower tray / bath when the shower head is left on the floor of the bath / shower tray during a cut in your water supply.
hence sometime the shower hose are fixed to the wall via a hoop so the shower head cant reach the ground. Or sometimes a non-return valve is used.
Without a pic its hard to guess.

Craftsman screw extractor set -- how does it work?

I have a 3-piece screw extractor set from Sears, but no manual or instructions. It's not completely clear how to use it. I bought it a long time ago on sale at half price, but never needed it till recently. I thought it was supposed to work by simply gripping the screw and turning it backward. But it can't grip the scew. None of the three sizes will grip it. It looks like it needs a big hole to be drilled in the middle of the screwhead so the extractor will fit in it far enough to grip it. But is that really how it's supposed to work?

Looking for a tool extractor and nobody can't identify with it - Help?

I have head screws which look like hourglass shapes. I'm trying to locate where I can purchase the correct extractor bit. I was told they come in 3 sizes and I have no problem buying them all. Anybody know what the proper name of this bit might be.

Those are slotted tamper proof one ways screws.

They are available in either flat head or round head design in sizes ranging from #6 to #14. They are slotted screws, and can be installed with a standard slotted screwdriver.

Removing them is another matter. If you look at the graphic, you will see that half of each side of the slot has been smoothed down during manufacture. When you try to extract the screw, the slotted screwdriver tip rides out of the slot. Very ingenious design.

Security screws are used in applications where either theft or vandalism is common and expected, such as wall-mounted safes and public bathroom fixtures and enclosures... the latter being the largest and most common application.

Surprise surprise... there is an extraction tool. It looks much like a screwdriver, but instead of having a full-width slotted head, it has two hardened steel pins located in place of the slot. When used on a security screw, the two pins do not ride up on the curved surface of the security screw. Instead, they give just enough grip to turn the screw out.

This tool is not easy to purchase. However, let me reassure you... there is no conspiracy to keep this tool from the public. Rather, it is used so infrequently that even the major hardware chains don't inventory it. Also, there are three sizes of this tool available... one for #6 and #8 screws, one for #10 and #12, and another for #14 and #16. At over $25.00 each, few people would want to own a matched set of these very specialized tools!

The security light is on my 2001 buick regal LS wont start how do I fix this?

I have a 2001 buick regal LS. I recently had to change the steering column out and now the care will not start. I am thinking its because the security light is on. Does anyone know how to reset the code to make the security light go off so the car will start? Or if maybe it could be something else?

Try this to reset the pass-lock security system.

This is free and all it takes is about 35 minutes of your time. If it doesn't work, all you are out is a little bit of your time.

First. make sure the battery is fully charged. If you have automatic headlights or daytime running lights disable them and it will help save your battery power. You should find instructions for this in your owner's manual. You could park the car in the sunlight which would not activate your head lights on most models.

Turn off all of the vehicle accessories. Roll down the windows. You roll down the windows just in case your doors lock while resetting your pass-lock security system.

Place the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the run position but don't start the engine. Don't use the accessories position as this will not work.

Leave the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes. At the 10 minute mark the security light will flash.

When the security light flashes turn the ignition off.

Wait a minute

Repeat these steps two more times. Do not start the engine or place the ignition in the accessories position or you will need to start over from the beginning.

After the third time of doing this your security system should be reset.

You say you changed the steering column. If this procedure does not work you may need to take the car to your nearest GM service department and get that "Great GM Feeling". If you did not install the original ignition switch with the new steering column it is very possible that the new ignition switch needs to be matched with the Pass Lock security system. This can only be done by a GM dealer because this process requires the use of a special scan tool connected to the diagnostic port. Most likely the only person that you will find with this scan tool is a GM dealer.

And no, the Pass Lock 2 security system can not be disabled. It is integrated into the car's computer systems and can not be bypassed or disabled.

What can I use to seal a hand painted skateboard deck?

I just finished painting my first skateboard deck and I'd like to seal it. I realize it won't completely protect it and that eventually the paint will chip off, crack, or fade. However, what's the best thing to do to give it the longest life possible?

Polyurethane in a spray can. It's clear, comes in gloss or satin finish, and is as tough as nails. Acetone won't even cut it. Try 4 coats. Just mist the first coat and get progressively heavier with each coat until the last one lays out nice and flat. 0000 steel wool between coats. Minwax brand.

I had this same problem before Christmas. My mom drinks wine and I wanted to get her a glass. I didn't see anything that I thought she would like. Then I found lady in georgia that would do it. I sent her a picture and she painted that glass for me. It was the best gift ever. Her name is Tabbi.
